Description

Hike It Florida is looking for motivated, outgoing individuals that enjoys the outdoors and enjoys teaching others about the outdoors. Our adventures occur all over Florida and around the US. We specialize in hiking, camping, backpacking, Appalachian Trail guided hikes, Leave No Trace principals, classes, on a year around schedule.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Lead Camp Counselor, the Camp Counselor is responsible for the direct care, supervision and wellbeing of all children enrolled in Day Camp, for children ages 5-11.

Essential Functions
• Release children ONLY to authorized persons (must ask for ID)
• Organizes and executes all activities for enrolled children.
• Monitors the program area at all times to ensure safety, and immediately makes changes as necessary.
• Provides a positive environment for all participants, and actively encourages participation to ensure growth and development.
• Exemplifies appropriate behavior and is a role model for participants; actively listens to all children and shows patience, understanding, and respect for others.
• Instructs and guides participants through the rules of the program and ensures adherence; disciplines children within established guidelines of Hike It Florida and parent, and only when appropriate.
• Immediately reports all unusual incidents or accidents to the Lead Camp counselor and Program Director, and fills out all applicable and necessary reports.
• Records daily attendance and maintains accurate and complete records.
• Ensures the childcare facility is neat, orderly and free of all safety impediments.
• Develops and fosters interpersonal relationships between participants, and is pro-active creating an environment of cooperation, friendliness, and helpfulness towards staff and customers.
• Develops and maintains age appropriate activities.
• Ensures all necessary supplies are on hand and well maintained at all times.
• Other job-related duties as assigned may be necessary to carry out the responsibilities of this position.

Requirements
  1. Hike It Florida is a drug, alcohol and tobacco free organization. Violation of the drug, alcohol and tobacco policies is cause for immediate termination.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen
  3. Must consent and pass a Back Ground Criminal screening
  4. Be in good physical condition
  5. Never have been convicted of child abuse, or any other crime in which the victim was a child
Qualifications
  1. Minimum of 16 years of age prior to the start of camp.
  2. Successfully complete State of Florida Criminal History Background Check requirements
  3. Prior experience working with children
  4. Able to adhere to drug/alcohol/smoke free workplace policy
  5. Able to maintain confidentiality
  6. Positive attitude
  7. Desire to be a quality role model, and to see people learn new skills and gain valuable experiences.
  8. Is in agreement with Hike it Florida’s philosophy and policies.
  9. Eagerness to learn and a desire to work with youth and adults of all ethnicities and economic backgrounds.
  10. Previous wilderness outdoor experience is beneficial, but not required.
  11. Enjoys wilderness travel and sharing outdoor experiences with people of all ages.
  12. Is able to function professionally under stressful situations.
  13. Willingness to put in long hours.
  14. Able to organize and lead recreational and educational activities and initiatives.
  15. Is able to display teaching ability with a constant emphasis on safety.
  16. Shows good communication skills and ability to understand people.
  17. Willing to forego personal rights for the common good of Hike It Florida and its participants.
  18. Willing to work outdoors in an outdoor environment.
  19. Holds, or is willing to receive training in:
         a. First aid
         b. CPR for the Professional Rescuer certifications
         c. Wilderness First Aid
  20. Has a driver’s license and a good driving record.
